Pine Hall Brick pavers help win Best In Class, Silver and Bronze awards in 2009 Brick in Architecture Awards competition

Winston-Salem, NC – July 9, 2009 – Pine Hall Brick, the largest supplier of clay brick pavers in the United States, had its pavers selected for three Brick in Architecture Award winners from the Brick Industry Association.

The winners were: a Best in Class award for an extensive renovation of the Pearl Brewery in San Antonio, Texas; a Silver award for the Cliffs Cottage project at Furman University in Greenville, South Carolina; and a Bronze award for Kings Court, a plaza in Haddonfield, New Jersey.

“BIA was notably impressed with the quality and diversity of the entries,” said association spokeswoman Kelly Ewell. “This diverse field made for intense competition and difficult decisions.”

Ted Corvey, paver director for Pine Hall Brick, said the company was proud that its products were chosen for the winning projects.

“This is further evidence that designers are continuing to look to genuine clay brick paver products because of their durability, their aesthetic appeal and their sustainability,” said Corvey.

The competition

Judges for the competition were made up of a jury panel of architects from across the country, which independently reviewed and scored each of the entries. In the end, eight projects were chosen as the best of their field.

The Pearl Brewery project won the Best in Class award for paving and landscape architecture, for architect Lake/Flato Architects; landscape architect Rialto Studio Inc.; manufacturer Pine Hall Brick; distributor Acme Brick Company; and mason contractors Boothe Brothers Paving Co. and Texas Hardscapes.

Pearl Brewery is a 23-acre site in San Antonio, Texas, upon which brewing operations took place between 1883 and 2001. The site has since been revitalized into a mix of commercial and residential property including condominium units, artists’ studios, and locally owned restaurants, shops and boutiques. The goal is to ultimately be a part of the historic San Antonio River Walk extension tied into downtown.

A custom blend of brick pavers was developed to harmonize with the colors of the existing buildings and to recall pavers that graced the streets of San Antonio during the early years of the brewery’s establishment – and to add visual unity throughout the site. Extensive use of clay brick pavers with rich rustic texturing complements the original brick building facades.

The Cliffs Cottage project in Greenville, South Carolina, won the Silver Award for paving and landscape architecture, for architect Johnston Design Group; landscape architect Innocenti & Webel; builder and mason contractor Triangle Construction and manufacturer Pine Hall Brick Co.

Cliffs Cottage is a 3,400-square-foot single family residence that was built as an idea house on the campus of Furman University by Southern Living magazine, with the intent that it be green in all respects, by using green technology in all of its mechanical systems and building materials.

That commitment to environmentally sound design included a permeable clay brick paver paving system in pedestrian walks and terraces close to the house.

The permeable pavers, a recent addition to Pine Hall Brick’s product line, provides architects with a way to reduce ‘first flush’ pollutants, such as fertilizers, motor oil and antifreeze, from being washed across a paved surface and ultimately ending up in storm drains, rivers and lakes. Instead, rainwater soaks into the groundwater, where it is naturally filtered.

From an aesthetic standpoint, the pavers visually connect the pedestrian walkways of the house, which will be converted to an academic building after being on display for a year, with the existing brick pedestrian walks used throughout the balance of the university’s Georgian campus.

The Kings Court in Haddonfield, New Jersey won the Bronze Award for paving and landscape architecture for architect Alberto & Associates; landscape architect Knolltop Nursery; associate architect Remington & Verdick Engineers; manufacturer Pine Hall Brick Company; distributor Church Brick Company and mason contractor Think Pavers Hardscaping.

Kings Court is an 11,000 square-foot plaza that anchors one end of the pedestrian-friendly main street of Haddonfield, New Jersey, which attracts visitors from throughout the region to its Colonial-era buildings. Today, residents and visitors to Kings Court are enjoying a number of recent upgrades and repairs, thanks to a public/private cooperative renovation of the plaza.

Designers of Kings Court chose clay brick pavers (traditional and permeable) for both aesthetic and functional reasons. The natural appearance of Rumbled® clay brick pavers are in keeping with the Colonial-era surroundings, while the Rumbled® permeable pavers help reduce stormwater run-off. The design itself even adds to the visitors’ experience, with directional herringbone patterns that encourage movement toward the plaza, while paver and stone patterns and borders define areas of rest and activity.

In addition, the pavers’ durability means that they will retain their original appearance under heavy use, while flexing with the subtle movements of the earth below. The skid-resistant, water-permeable surface of the finished plaza handles foot traffic in any weather and drains precipitation efficiently, thus helping keep pedestrians safe, reducing storm-drain pollutants and reducing the likelihood of water damage to nearby buildings.
